The vehicle won numerous honors in worldwide competition
The Jaguar I-Pace was officially released in 2018 as the carmaker’s first-ever fully-electric vehicle. Since it debuted, it has added a slew of accolades to its moniker.
On April 17 at the New York International Auto Show in New York City, the I-Pace won what Jaguar refers to a “historic trifecta”: Along with being recognized as the 2019 World Car of the Year, it was also acknowledged for World Car Design of the Year and for being the World Green Car.
A panel of 86 journalists from 24 countries judged the outcome, which came just weeks after the I-Pace claimed the European Car of the Year label.
Dr. Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, said the three major awards provide the company’s first all-electric vehicle with the recognition it deserves. He thanked those who worked on the vehicle and made it that great.
“It is an honor that the Jaguar I-PACE has received these three accolades from the prestigious World Car jurors,” Speth said. “We started with an ideal, to move toward our Destination Zero vision: zero emissions, zero accidents and zero congestion.
“The I-PACE is our first step to achieving this, and it was conceived when EVs were little more than a niche choice. So, we started from a clean sheet of paper to create a new benchmark: the world’s best premium electric vehicle, and a true Jaguar driver’s car.”
Previously, the vehicle was honored by Popular Science in November 2018 for being one of the year’s best and newest innovations, due to its winning combination of technology, design and performance.
I-Pace features show a leap in advancement
The 2019 I-Pace, available at Jaguar Shreveport, possesses what Jaguar officials say illustrates the brand’s dedication to technological advancement. While it is the brand’s first fully-electric vehicle, it’s what is underneath the hood that really draws acclaim.
An advanced electric drivetrain is accompanied by stringent architecture that has become synonymous with the brand. A spacious interior that exists due to the electrical architecture of the vehicle allows for more bells and whistles, in the form of premium details and craftsmanship.
The I-Pace was also the first Jaguar vehicle to incorporate the Jaguar InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, which uses an array of touchscreens, sensors and tactile physical controls while reducing clutter within the cabin. Two touchscreens actually compose the center console area and were constructed as a deterrent to commonplace driver distraction.
Two motors — one on the front axle, and one on the rear — are powered by a 90kWh battery. Drivers can expect about 234 miles per charge, with the vehicle able to hit 0-60 MPH acceleration in just 4.5 seconds.
“Designing Jaguar cars is probably the best job in the world, and I can honestly say that no other project I’ve worked on has been as rewarding as the I-PACE,” said Jaguar Director of Design Ian Callum. “Electric vehicles offer designers unprecedented freedom to rethink the proportions, the profile and the packaging, and it’s an opportunity that my team has exploited in full.”
